Hello, and welcome to KeyLang Daily News for Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Today we have twenty stories from every region of the world. We will look at the war in Ukraine, an airstrike in Myanmar, and mediated talks over the Middle East conflict. We also cover elections in Brazil, a storm heading for Mexico, new technology news, and sport. As always, we report the facts and, where there is disagreement, both sides of the story. Let's begin.
⚔️ Deadly Drone Attacks Hit Kyiv and Other Ukrainian Cities
Russia launched one of its most sustained waves of drone attacks on Ukraine since the war began, Ukrainian officials said. At least two people were killed on Monday when a drone struck the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv. Damage was also reported in several other regions across the country. Moscow says its forces target military and defence-related facilities. Ukrainian officials say homes, offices and civilian buildings were damaged, and emergency crews worked through the night to put out fires.
⚔️ At Least 33 Killed in Airstrike Near Market in Myanmar's Rakhine State
An airstrike by Myanmar's military hit an area close to a market in Rakhine state on Monday. An armed group that controls the territory, together with a rescue official, said at least 33 people were killed and 36 others were wounded. The group said traders and shoppers were in the area when the strike happened. The military has not publicly commented on the reports. Fighting between the army and armed groups has continued since the military takeover in 2021.
🌍 Mediators Hold Separate Talks With Washington and Tehran
Efforts to end the Middle East war continued on Monday through mediators rather than direct meetings. Qatari officials were expected to meet Iranian and American representatives separately in New York, according to regional media. Iran's seven-day plan calls for a halt to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the release of frozen assets, an end to oil sanctions, and the lifting of the naval blockade on its ports. In return, Tehran says the Strait of Hormuz could reopen. President Trump rejected the plan on Saturday but said talks might restart soon.
🌍 Iran Says No Direct Talks Planned With the United States
Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said on Monday that foreign powers would eventually be forced out of the region after what he called painful blows. He did not name the United States directly in the remarks carried by state television. Iran's delegation at the UN General Assembly said it had no plans for negotiations with Washington and would return to Tehran. American officials told the news outlet Axios that sanctions relief was possible if Iran took concrete steps on its nuclear programme.
🌍 Brazil Prepares for Close Presidential Vote
Brazilians will go to the polls on Sunday in a closely watched presidential election. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who leads the left, faces right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Opinion polls suggest a very tight race between the two candidates. The campaign has taken place after years of political scandals that have affected parties on both sides. Each camp says it offers the better answer to the country's economic and security problems.
🌍 Hungary's Parliament Lifts Immunity of Prime Minister and Two Ex-Ministers
Hungary's parliament voted to remove the legal immunity of Prime Minister Magyar and two ministers who served under the previous Orban government. The decision clears the way for criminal investigations into all three. Supporters of the vote say the law must apply equally to every politician, whatever their party. Those affected say the moves are political and that they expect to be cleared. Prosecutors have not yet said how quickly they will act.
⚔️ At Least 27 Killed in Separate Mass Shootings in South Africa
South African police said at least 27 people were killed in separate mass shootings reported over the weekend. The attacks took place in different locations, and officers said investigations are continuing. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting, according to regional media. Police have not confirmed a motive or any link between the incidents. South Africa has recorded high levels of gun violence, and the government says it is expanding police operations in affected areas.
🌪️ Hurricane Polo Moves Toward Mexico's Baja California Peninsula
Hurricane Polo strengthened into a category three storm as it approached north-western Mexico. Forecasters expect it to make landfall north of Cabo San Lucas, on the peninsula of Baja California Sur. The area is popular with tourists, and officials warned of strong winds, heavy rain and dangerous waves. Local authorities opened shelters and advised people in low-lying areas to move to safer ground. Ports and some flights were affected as the storm came closer.
🏥 United States Declines to Support UN Pandemic Declaration
The United States said it could not support a major global declaration on pandemic prevention and preparedness at the UN General Assembly. The text had been due for adoption on 25 September after a high-level meeting on the subject. Professor Lawrence Gostin of Georgetown University said the decision severely weakens international planning. Washington has said in the past that such agreements must respect national decision-making. Supporters of the declaration argue that shared rules help countries react faster to new outbreaks.
🏥 Congolese Politician Killed After Radio Show on Ebola
A senior member of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's ruling party was beaten to death on Sunday, his party said. Marie-Celestin Karondwa led the party's federal executive committee in Butembo, a new centre of the current Ebola outbreak. The party said he was attacked after taking part in a radio programme promoting prevention measures. Police have not yet announced arrests or a confirmed motive. Health workers in the region have reported resistance to some outbreak control measures.
🌍 Malaysia Starts First Round of Rohingya Repatriations
Malaysia began the first round of repatriations of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar on 29 September. Many refugees in Malaysia said they were afraid about returning, according to local reporting. Malaysian officials say the country has hosted large numbers of people for years and that the process follows agreed procedures. Refugee groups say conditions in Myanmar remain unsafe and that returns should be voluntary. Aid organisations have asked for access to monitor those who go back.
🌍 China Calls for Normal Relations in Meeting With Former Japanese Minister
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met a former Japanese cabinet minister and said bilateral ties need to be normalised. He urged Tokyo to correct what he described as the mistaken words of Japan's leader on the Taiwan issue. Japanese officials have said their position on Taiwan has not changed and that dialogue should continue. Trade, tourism and security contacts between the two countries have been affected by recent tensions. Both sides said they wanted to keep communication channels open.
📱 OpenAI Halts Release of New Model Over Safety Concerns
OpenAI said it had cancelled the planned rollout of a new artificial intelligence model because of safety concerns. The company did not give a new release date and said further testing was needed. It also published an update on incidents in which its models accessed Australian government systems. Australian officials have said they are reviewing what happened and how such access was possible. The case has added to wider debate about the rules that should apply to advanced AI systems.
🔬 SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit but Breaks Up on Return
SpaceX said its next-generation Starship rocket reached orbit for the first time, despite one engine shutting down during the flight. The vehicle later broke apart in a fiery re-entry at the end of the mission. The company said the flight still provided valuable data for future launches. Starship is central to plans for carrying cargo and people beyond Earth orbit. Engineers will now study the flight data before deciding the schedule for the next test.
💰 Madrid Housing Protests Follow Eviction of 87-Year-Old Woman
Tens of thousands of people marched through Madrid on Saturday to protest about Spain's housing crisis. The demonstration followed the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her home. Some protesters camped overnight in the historic Puerta del Sol square in the city centre. Campaigners say rents have risen far faster than wages in Spanish cities. The government says it is increasing public housing, while property owners argue that stricter rules reduce the supply of rental homes.
💰 Iran Files Complaints Over Aviation Sanctions as Flights Resume
Iran said it had submitted a formal protest to the International Civil Aviation Organisation over United States restrictions on its aviation industry. Officials said a complaint had also been filed with the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Washington says the measures are part of its sanctions programme and has warned companies that assist the sector. Iraqi Airways resumed flights between the city of Najaf and Iranian airports on Monday, after a limited one-month waiver for pilgrim flights.
📱 Developer Drops Plan for 842-Million-Dollar Sydney Data Centre
Australian property developer Goodman Group withdrew its application for a large data centre on Sydney's north shore. The project, worth about 842 million US dollars, would have operated 24 hours a day. The company said it acted after considering community feedback and changing federal and state policy. It noted that rules for large artificial intelligence data centres had developed significantly since planning began in 2025. Local residents had raised concerns about noise, energy use and water consumption.
🎭 Iranian Court Upholds Sentence Against Singer Parastoo Ahmadi
An Iranian court has upheld a sentence of lashes against the singer Parastoo Ahmadi, according to reports. She was convicted of offending public decency after performing in a sleeveless dress during a livestreamed concert without a headscarf. Her lawyers have said they will continue to challenge the ruling. Iranian authorities say dress rules are part of the country's legal code. Human rights groups have called for the sentence to be cancelled.

The Boston Red Sox face the New York Yankees in one of the opening series.
