⚔️ Tigray Forces Leave Northern Ethiopian Capital as Federal Troops Advance

Fighting that began on September 23 in northern Ethiopia has intensified, and forces linked to the Tigray People's Liberation Front have reportedly left the regional capital as federal troops advanced. The government says the group attacked neighbouring regions first. The TPLF says its actions were a response to pressure on Tigray. Aid organisations warn that the fighting could repeat the humanitarian conditions seen during the conflict between 2020 and 2022, which affected millions of people.

⚔️ Second Major Bridge in Kyiv Struck in Russian Attack

Russian forces struck the Pivnichnyi, or Northern, Bridge in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials. It is the second major bridge in the city to be hit, after repeated attacks on another crossing in recent weeks. Ukrainian authorities say the strikes target transport links used daily by civilians. Moscow has said its forces attack military and infrastructure targets. Traffic across the river has been disrupted, and engineers are assessing the damage.

⚔️ Five Killed in Gaza Strike, Health Officials Say, as Ceasefire Strains

Health officials in Gaza say an Israeli strike killed five people, including four women. Israel says Hamas has been rebuilding its weapons and carrying out attacks in violation of the ceasefire, and that it has increased strikes in recent weeks in response. Hamas has previously rejected such claims and accused Israel of breaking the agreement. Mediators continue to hold talks aimed at keeping the ceasefire in place, with humanitarian deliveries still limited.

⚔️ North Korea Says It Tested a Manoeuvrable Intermediate-Range Missile

North Korea announced on Saturday that it test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile. State media said the weapon can change direction in flight to avoid missile defences in South Korea and Japan. Kim Yo-jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong-un, said her brother supervised the launch and described the missile as strategic. The test follows rising tension between the two Koreas over landmine explosions near the border. Seoul and Tokyo said they were analysing the launch.

🌍 US to Place Anti-Ship Missile System on Japanese Island Near Taiwan

The United States plans to deploy its Navy-Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System, known as NMESIS, on Yonaguni Island in Japan's Okinawa prefecture. According to Japanese regional defence officials, the uncrewed, ground-based launcher will arrive during joint exercises held every two years this month. It is the first such deployment on the Japanese island closest to Taiwan. Beijing has repeatedly said that military build-ups near the Taiwan Strait increase tension, while Tokyo says the exercises are defensive.

⚔️ Houthis Report Strike Near Riyadh; Saudi Strikes Reported on Sanaa

Houthi forces said they struck an oil facility south of Riyadh belonging to the company Aramco, where flames and heavy smoke were reported. The same group accused Saudi forces of carrying out twenty-six strikes on the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Saturday, after loud explosions were heard across the city. Saudi officials have described their operations as responses to attacks on their territory. Energy markets are watching for any effect on oil production and exports.

🌍 UN Says 150,000 People Have Fled Their Homes in Yemen

The United Nations says at least one hundred and fifty thousand people have left their homes in Yemen because of recent fighting. The agency says this adds to a crisis in which more than five million people were already displaced inside the country after years of conflict. Aid groups report shortages of clean water, food and medical supplies in areas receiving new arrivals. Humanitarian agencies say funding for Yemen operations remains well below what they requested.

🌍 Philippines Raises Concern Over Deadly Airstrike in Myanmar

The Philippines has expressed concern about an airstrike in Myanmar that reportedly killed about fifty civilians. Manila, which currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, said it is ready to help organise discussions on how the bloc can support peace efforts. Myanmar's military government has said its operations target armed opponents. Opposition groups say civilians are being hit. ASEAN members have long disagreed about how firmly to engage with the authorities in Naypyidaw.

🌍 Pakistan Government and Opposition Talks Run Past Midnight

Talks between Pakistan's government and the opposition PTI continued past midnight at Parliament House in Islamabad. Both sides agreed not to speak to the media before the discussions end. Sources say the PTI wants its founder Imran Khan moved from prison to a hospital, while the government wants the party to cancel a protest march planned for October 4. The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said the march will go ahead as scheduled.

🌍 Brazil Accuses Washington of Interfering Before Presidential Vote

Brazil is preparing to elect its next president, and the government has accused the United States of interfering in the campaign. Supporters of President Lula da Silva say outside pressure, including tariffs and statements about legal cases, affects national sovereignty. Allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro reject that view and say closer ties with Washington would help trade and security. US officials have said their comments concern judicial matters, not the vote itself.

⚔️ Two Iranian Nationals Remanded in UK Over Alleged Attack Plot

A court in the United Kingdom has remanded two Iranian nationals in custody after they were charged with planning attacks on Jewish targets in Manchester. The pair were arrested on the evening before Yom Kippur. Prosecutors say the alleged plot was motivated by antisemitism. The defendants have not entered pleas, and the case will return to court at a later date. Iran's government has in the past rejected accusations of involvement in plots abroad.

Two of those taken to hospital, a five-year-old girl and a sixty-seven-year-old man, were described as being in critical condition. Officers said the driver remained at the scene and that the investigation is continuing. Police have not yet said what caused the incident and asked the public to avoid speculation.

🔬 Departing OpenAI Engineer Says AI Firms Are Not Careful Enough

A safety engineer leaving OpenAI said artificial intelligence companies are, in his words, not being nearly careful enough. He argued that the industry needs rules similar to those used in nuclear power and aviation. His comments came days after President Donald Trump signed a voluntary agreement with major AI companies. Supporters of the agreement say flexible rules allow faster innovation, while critics say voluntary promises cannot be enforced. OpenAI has said safety work continues internally.

Lawyers for Christa Pike say she is unconscious and on a ventilator after surviving an execution attempt in the US state of Tennessee. It was the state's second execution this year that did not go as planned. The governor has stopped all further executions for the rest of 2026 while officials review procedures. Supporters of the death penalty say the law should be carried out. Opponents say the cases show the process is unreliable.

Researchers in the Democratic Republic of Congo have started a trial of a drug given after exposure to the Bundibugyo virus, a rare type of Ebola. About two hundred and fifty people who were exposed to the virus are taking part. Scientists hope the treatment can prevent them from developing the disease. Health officials say the results could change how outbreaks are controlled. Earlier outbreaks of the virus have had high death rates.

💰 FAA Says Boeing 737 Max Software Issue Is Not a Safety Concern

The United States Federal Aviation Administration has concluded that a software problem found on the Boeing 737 Max does not create a safety concern. Some safety campaigners have asked for more independent review. Airlines are waiting for the new model to enter service.
